Bodywork & Paint

5-29-2010

The last few weeks I have been fitting reproduction doors, fenders, working on gaps and starting the worst of the body filler.

I seems so weird not to have rust to cut out and replace!  Hopefully it will have paint before the end of summer!!

Bodywork isn't the most fun thing to do in the world, but at least you know you are getting closer to paint everyday.  It has taken awhile to work on the gaps and get the filler flat.  I took the day off today and rolled the car outside and shot 3-4 coats of 2k build primer on everything.  I'm going to try to leave it alone for a week or so and let it have a chance to cure and shrink then I will try blocking it out and see what it looks like.  I know there are a few little spots to address, but hopefully it is getting pretty close.

This is really one of the hardest parts of a restoration.. what color to paint?

New Game Plan - last minute color change after going to the Car Show in Alton today.

Not to offend the Springtime Yellow lovers out there, but this color never truly grew on us.  We aren't the car show points type people and we have no plans to ever sell this car, so we have decided to say to hell originality.

We are going to paint our '67 with a '65 Mustang Color called Twilight Turquoise and then enjoy the heck out of it.

It has a little metallic in it and in base coat / clear coat and is an awesome color!

So with a milestone date like 10-10-2010 it seems it is fitting that we make a milestone with the Mustang project.  For the first time in 4 years it will be outside the garage!  Today I hauled it over to the body-shop where this week it will become a horse of a different color!

I have done the best I can getting it ready for the painter.  This week Eric at Autobody Alternative will be taking over and touching up anything that needs a little more work, then giving the car its new identity.  Check back next week to see how it turns out.

The '68 coupe doesn't know what to think having the garage all to itself tonight?

Eric went over my work, touched up a few spots and prepped the car for paint this week.  Nothing like a little base coat to make a car start taking on a new personality!  I was very thankful that Eric let me hang out this afternoon and shoot a few pictures.  I have painted 5 or 6 cars myself each getting a little better, but I really wanted this car's paint to look good.  I was lucky to find a good painter with a smaller shop that was willing to work with me on this project.

Today 3 coats of base and tomorrow the clear then it will really look good.

Today 3 coats of clear.  The first two went great, something happened on the 3rd coat and we got some crap in the last coat of clear.  Nothing major but it looks like a cut and buff is coming next. This car should really look good after the wet sanding and buffing.

Next week Eric will shoot the hood, fenders, trunk lid and all the other little odds and ends.

OK now for a couple outside shots..

Even though the car looks darn nice and has an awesome shine.  It can look better with a little more work.

So next came the hard part, taking sandpaper to the 3 day old clear coat.  I wet sanded it working from 1500 then 2000 and finally 2500 to get the car a flat as I could.  I pretty much stayed away from the sharp edges as I don't want to cut through the edges where the clear is probably thinnest.

Some great resources online (plug for Classic Mustang Forum) suggested I try out a different polishing compound than I have ever used before.  The product is called Sure Finish and it is a single polish that you can use with wool for the first buffing and then you move to foam with the same product to finish polishing.

This is after about 10-15 minutes with wool on the rear quarter.

Then another 10-15 minutes with a yellow foam pad.  I don't think I will need to even use the black foam pad as I don't see any swirl marks to be worried about.  This stuff works great buffing really slow so I wasn't making a mess at all.  It was well worth the few days wait to mail order this product.

I will probably cry the first time we get a door ding (if only they would always stay this way).  This weeks other project while waiting for the polish was to pull out the rear-end tear it down, blast the housing and get some epoxy primer on it.  You can see it in the reflection of the door!

Tomorrow I will finish the drivers door and trunk.  The hood and fenders will wait until they go on the car down the road.  I have a feeling that I will be buffing and polishing the coupe and our cars in the near future as well.

Here is a link to where you can buy Sure Finish.
